The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has sent out an advisory to all petrol pump owners in the Garo Hills region to hire only local employees for the company, community and the environment to reap benefits.
According to the organisation, petrol firms are constantly expanding and hiring on non-locals is preferred due to cost efficiency. However, it says that it is important for such firms to also recognise the value of local talent and contribute to the overall well-being of the local community while ensuring their own success in a rapidly evolving industry.
AHAM president, Georgeprince Ch. Momin in a statement today pointed out that the primary reasons to employ only locals is to support the local economy and to build a sense of ownership and pride within the community.
He said in addition to the economic and social benefits, there are practical advantages to hiring locals in petrol firms. “Local employees are likely to have a better understanding of the local market and customer needs. They are familiar with the local culture, language, and customs, which can be invaluable when dealing with customers and suppliers. Moreover, their knowledge of the local geography and infrastructure can help in optimizing distribution and logistics, resulting in greater efficiency,” he added.
Stating that petrol firms are often subject to environmental regulations and sustainability goals, Momin said, by employing locals these firms can tap into the local knowledge and expertise of environmentally friendly practices and technologies specific to the region, which can help in reducing the environmental footprint of these firms and contribute to the overall sustainability efforts.
Furthermore, he said it is equally important to invest in the training and development of local talent by providing educational and vocational training programs. Petrol firms can equip locals with the necessary skills and knowledge required to excel in the industry that will not only benefit the company, but also help develop a pool of skilled workers who can contribute to other sectors of the economy.
