North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum’s controversial motion to revisit the state’s reservation policy was defeated in the Assembly today.
Nongrum has been leading the charge to amend the policy, which allocates 40 percent of government jobs to the Garo community and 40 percent to the Khasi-Jaintia community. As the latter population is larger, Nongrum feels that it should have a bigger share of the quota.
Nongrum requested the need to refer the resolution to a select committee.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma asked Nongrum to withdraw the motion as the issues are “highly sensitive”.
