The Congress has reposed faith in the new and young by granting them tickets to contest the district council elections and found opportunity for growth in the departure of the old.
This was stated by Congress president Vincent H Pala during a press conference today. He said the candidates recommended by the block and district committees for the district councils of Khasi and Jaintia Hills consist of a mix of experienced, new, and young individuals.
The Congress had released its second list of contenders and is set to release another before January 16.
Pala said the party is not experiencing a setback when its leaders leave, rather an opportunity for the Congress to grow. “While the NPP has taken our MLAs and MDCs, we have become stronger because we remain committed to the truth, the people, and our vision,” he said.
He said the public now recognises those who left for personal gain and many others have since returned. “I can confidently say this is an opportunity for the party to grow stronger,” he added.
The Congress president hoped that the people will give a clear mandate stating the electorates will recognise the party’s its contributions to the Sixth Schedule and the amendment of relevant bills.
Congress leader and sitting MDC Pynshngain N Syiem emphasised the need for regulations to protect, promote, and preserve the traditions and culture of Indigenous people.
He pointed out that there are several areas where the district council can be strengthened and highlighted the importance of improving its financial standing, drawing attention to the challenges currently faced by both the district councils.
Meanwhile, the Congress has approved Nathaniel Rymmai and George Clarence as presidents of the Sohiong and Mawphlang block congress committees respectively.
