Shillong, Jul 16: A youth from Mizoram wanted in connection with a case of rape and sexual exploitation here in Shillong surrendered before the Meghalaya Police on Thursday.
The 21-year-old surrendered at the Laitumkhrah Police Station. He has been on the run since early July 2026, prompting the Meghalaya Police to form a Special Investigation Team and issue a nationwide lookout notice.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the accused was arrested and will be produced in court. He said cases under section 3/4/11/12 POCSO Act and Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the youth.
The youth is wanted after allegations surfaced on social media, which claim that multiple young women may have been victimised, triggering public outrage and demands for swift justice.
So far one FIR has been registered on July 7 as police have appealed those who may have faced similar alleged crimes by the same accused to come forward and file an FIR.
