The MDCs of the United Democratic Party (UDP) will meet in Shillong shortly following the results of the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC and JHADC) elections, which were declared yesterday.
The UDP finished second in the KHADC race and third in the JHADC. It will certainly have to sit in the opposition benches in the former, though it is likely to support the National People’s Party (NPP) in the JHADC.
Former KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne was returned as Sohra MDC, bucking the trend that saw the Voice of the People Party (VPP) sweep to power. Chyne had been CEM during the last KHADC until he was the victim of a coup that saw the NPP ditch the UDP and ally itself with the Congress instead. Both the NPP and Congress suffered badly in the recent election.
Chyne said that the UDP is prepared to sit in opposition and added that the ability of the VPP MDCs will be measured by their performance in the district council.
He also said that his victory from Sohra shows that the public are attached to him and therefore he was able to make a return despite many stalwarts in the KHADC falling by the wayside.
Chyne also said that the poor performance of the UDP in the district council polls is due to the VPP wave that swept the Khasi Hills region.
