A state Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) coordinator, Rasel Uddin Choudhary, has called for the state government to reserve 8 per cent of government jobs for the non-tribal population of Meghalaya.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Choudhury alleged that the current job reservation policy is an example of “unfair discrimination” towards the state’s non-tribal residents.
Although the reservation was introduced to ensure that the historically marginalised tribals were given adequate representation in the government services, it has in recent years become “disproportionately disadvantageous” to non-tribals in Meghalaya, Choudhury said, who face a “genuine crisis of opportunities”.
An 8 per cent reservation would go some way in correcting this, he concluded.
