Shillong, Jul 25: In a bid to preserve the natural beauty and environment of Sohra, the Hima has implemented stringent measures to curb littering and open dumping of waste by picnic parties and tourists.
The Hima Sohra has banned picnicking and open cooking along the Mawkdok-Sohra Road and other locations under its jurisdiction, with violators facing strict penalties.
According to Adviser of Hima Sohra, Alan West Kharkongor, picnicking, open cooking, and outdoor dining are strictly prohibited without prior permission from the local Dorbar Shnong.
Kharkongor also said that vehicles entering Sohra are required to carry their own waste bags, and disposal of waste on open grounds or roadsides is strictly forbidden.
He also said that the new measures also include restrictions on night camping, which is only allowed at designated camping sites.
“Unauthorized camping outside these areas is strictly prohibited unless managed by professional groups or societies. Additionally, trekking within the areas under Ka Hima Sohra’s jurisdiction now requires hiring a local guide,” the Adviser to the Hima Sohra added.
Meanwhile, the Hima Sohra administration has also imposed restrictions on Vloggers, social-media influencers, media channels, and individuals who wish to promote, publish, or reveal any new or undisclosed spots within its jurisdiction.
“Prior approval from the Tourism Committee of Ka Hima Sohra is mandatory to ensure that tourism activities do not harm the local economy and environment,” Kharkongor said.
He also said that these measures are being enforced to protect both the local economy and the region’s unique selling point – its natural environment.
The adviser of Hima Sohra emphasized that the sustainable growth of tourism in the region is a top priority, and these measures will help achieve that goal.
By taking these steps, Hima Sohra aims to preserve its natural beauty and ensure that tourism benefits the local community without compromising the environment.
