Shillong, Jul 25: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong today said that the Meghalaya government has asked its Assam counterpart to fix a date convenient for both states to resume Phase 2 of the border negotiations.
“Let us wait and see whether the date is available or not for them,” Tynsong told reporters on the sidelines of a programme.
The Deputy CM said that it seems that Assam is fully busy in preparing for the state elections in 2026.
Meanwhile, Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) president and member of the West Khasi Hills regional committee, KP Pangniang, voiced concern over the delay, stressing the need for both states to speed up efforts to settle the long-standing border issues.
Highlighting the governments’ earlier resolve during the first phase of talks, Pangniang recalled that a recent meeting in Langpih saw renewed calls for the Meghalaya government to prioritise resolving the dispute in that area.
He further pointed out that with Assam now gearing up for state elections, all indications suggest that the Assam government may only resume discussions with Meghalaya once the polls are over.
