Nearly 1 lakh migrant labourers have registered with the Labour Department as per the provisions of the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act 2020.
As of 2024, a total of 93,283 migrant workers have registered, with East Khasi Hills leading the way with 41,242 registrations, followed by East Jaintia Hills with 29,932.
The registration process, launched in 2021, aims to ensure the safety and security of migrant workers in Meghalaya. The department has collected Rs 9.33 crore from registrations in 2024.
Recently, the Meghalaya Assembly passed an amendment to increase the penalty for non-compliance from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
The amendment also introduces stricter guidelines for interstate migrant workers, including thorough background checks using the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS).
After EKH and EJH, Ri-Bhoi comes third with 10,138 migrant labourer registrations, West Khasi Hills with 3,820, West Jaintia Hills with 3,575, South West Khasi Hills with 2,858, West Garo Hills with 782, North Garo Hills with 372, South Garo Hills with 326, East Garo Hills with 183 and South West Garo Hills with just 55.
