The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance pertaining to a video clip of police not covering the body of a 19-year-old murder victim in East Garo Hills district.
The victim was hacked to death by a man at Dawa Matchakolgre area in Williamnagar on July 18. The accused, James R Sangma, was supposedly in a relationship with the victim. He is accused of having hacked the woman to death in Samgong area with an axe.
“The death was handed openly without any covering which is seen by the onlookers, which shows insensitivity by the police personnel,” the MHRC stated in its order.
The commission also stated that there are also reports alleging that the One Stop Centre (OSC) at Williamnagar did not take appropriate action when the victim approached the centre.
“The commission directed the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills District, to submit a report on this matter. The commission also directed the Director of Social Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, to submit a report along with a copy of the press clipping to the Director, Social Welfare”, the order said.
Earlier, the MHRC had sought a report on the violent incident from the SP.
