The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), North Khasi Hills District, today conducted a self-sanctioned check in Byrnihat on transportation of live fish into Meghalaya.
According to the group, many of the vehicles were found transporting fish without required documents, particularly the mandatory trading license.
The HNYF stated that none of the vehicle owners were locals, and all belonged to non-tribal communities who were using Khasi names to gain entry into the state and sell live fish. This practice is believed to negatively affect local traders and people of the state.
The HNYF said its action is part of its efforts to protect the interests of local communities and ensure compliance with the law.
The pressure group has emphasised the importance of adhering to regulations and respecting the rights of indigenous traders in Meghalaya and urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to take serious action against those conducting trade without necessary licenses.
