The West Garo Hills District Swimming Association has begun its preparations for selecting swimmers that will represent the state at the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host.
Seventeen swimmers, all above 14 years of age, that include five girls and 12 boys, from the five Garo Hills districts (West, South West, South, North, and East), participated in the trial held at the Swimming Pool Complex in Rongkhon, Tura on Saturday.
Another round of trials is scheduled for July 26.
The selected swimmers from both trials will undergo basic training at the swimming complex before proceeding to Shillong for the final selection process.
The association aims to create awareness and identify talented swimmers who can represent Meghalaya in the national games. During the trials, some swimmers showcased impressive skills and techniques, demonstrating their potential to excel at the national level.
A few swimmers stood out for their speed, agility, and endurance in the water. However, others require additional training to refine their skills and build confidence.
President of the Association, Jasper P. Marak emphasised that the association wants to create awareness and provide guidance and training to swimmers from Garo Hills, increasing their chances of selection.
Although the response to the trials was not as encouraging as expected, Marak hoped that participation would increase in the coming days, particularly during the second round of trials.
Marak highlighted the potential for swimming talent in Garo Hills, similar to other sports, but lamented the lack of facilities that hinders swimmers from demonstrating their talent.
