Five personnel of the Sohra Police Station, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for torturing a 19-year-old youth in custody.
This came after an inquiry was conducted by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Pynursla, Baialamphang Wanswett, the report of which was submitted on Wednesday.
“One Sub-Inspector and four Unarmed Branch Constables of Sohra Police Station have been placed under suspension with immediate effect,” East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem said.
Departmental proceedings have also been initiated against them, he added.
Syiem also said that a criminal case has been registered against the personnel under Sohra P.S Case No. 10/2025 U/S 120(1)/3(5) BNS, and the investigation is being conducted by an Inspector-level officer from a different Police Station to ensure impartiality.
Meanwhile, the SP also stated that on July 1, a written FIR was lodged at Sohra Police Station by the Rangbah Shnong of Mawkisyiem about a serious incident involving the youth, Getwin Jyrwa.
As per the complaint, on June 28 Getwin, who hails from Mawkisyiem, assaulted an individual at Mawap, Mawkisyiem, using abusive and vulgar language, and issued threats to the victim and his clan.
Syiem said that furthermore, in full public view, he allegedly exposed his private parts and made explicit threats, causing embarrassment and fear among the public.
“Despite being summoned twice by the Dorbar Shnong Mawkisyiem, Jyrwa failed to appear,” the SP said.
Syiem informed that based on the FIR, Sohra police on July 2 at around 9 pm proceeded to apprehend him, however, the accused managed to flee before their arrival.
