The art of storytelling through theatre was the focus of a two-day workshop held at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), led by renowned local theatre artist Lapdiang Syiem.
The June 17-18 workshop on ‘Storytelling in Tourism and Music: Bridging Culture, Emotion and Experience through Theatre’ was jointly organised by the Departments of Tourism and Travel Management and Department of Music and was held at the MLCU campus in Nongrah.
The workshop aimed to enhance students’ skills in creative storytelling and theatrical techniques, fostering cultural sensitivity, emotional intelligence and effective communication.
Syiem shared her unique approach to storytelling, which is rooted in Khasi folklore. Through engaging activities, students explored body movement, memory and space in performance, while also learning about technical elements such as lighting, props and set design. Participants included second-semester students from BTTM and MA Music, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration.
The workshop concluded with short student-led performances and a captivating theatrical presentation by Syiem on Ka Nohkalikai, the famous Khasi legend, accompanied by Apkyrmen Tangsong on the traditional instruments – bisli (flute), ksing (drum) and duitara (stringed instrument). “This emotionally powerful act left a lasting impression on the audience,” an MLCU press release stated today.
Through interactive sessions, group projects and hands-on practice, the workshop empowered students to develop compelling narratives and connect more deeply with audiences whether as tour guides, musicians, or storytellers, the release added.
