Boundary pillars in areas where Meghalaya and Assam have signed a border settlement agreement in the first phase will be erected by August 15.
This was informed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma after a high-level meeting between the two states held in Guwahati on Monday.
“We are very close to actually finalising the pillars and I am happy to inform you that most likely, by the 15th of August, or before the 15th of August, we will be able to resolve and finalise the actual pillars in the five areas of differences,” Sangma said.
He said a few areas in Gijang and Tarabari will also be sorted before erecting the pillars.
He also termed this as a major milestone and another strong testament of the friendship between Assam and Meghalaya.
Meghalaya and Assam had on March 29, 2022 signed an MoU to end their border dispute in six contested locations of Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata and Ratacherra.
The areas in Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pillangkata fall under the jurisdiction of Hima Nonglang, Hima Jirang, Hima Nongspung and Hima Mylliem.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said the second phase of the border negotiations with Assam will continue.
In the second phase of boundary settlement, the two states will try to resolve the differences in Langpih, Borduar, Deshdoonreah, Block-I, Block-II, Psiar-Khanduli, and Nongwah-Mawtamur (Garbhanga).
