In a critical blow to the United Democratic Party (UDP), former MLA and general secretary Jemino Mawthoh tendered his resignation on Saturday.
In his resignation letter to UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh, Mawthoh stated that his resignation was due to “unavoidable circumstances” and his decision was purely “personal”.
Mawthoh represented the UDP as its legislator of Nongthymmai constituency from 2013 to 2018. He was also the working president of the UDP in 2014 and served as its general secretary from 2016, till date.
He lost the 2018 Assembly elections and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but lost. In 2023 he lost the seat to TMC’s Charles Pyngrope.
Mawthoh in the letter to the party informed that he is also tendering his resignation as the Honorary Adviser to the Planning, Investment Promotion and Sustainable Development Department, Government of Meghalaya.
However even after several calls from this reporter and the office of the Highland Post he was unreachable.
Sources said that Mawthoh was approached by several political parties in the state like the NPP, BJP and VPP to join their fold.
