Taking a tough stand against the movement of heavy trucks along the PMGSY road from Umdu to 20 Mer Pahammawlein, seven villages under Raid Sohkhwai in Ri Bhoi district have banned such vehicles using the route.
A strong warning has also been issued that violators will be apprehended and handed over to law enforcement for legal action.
These villages include Sohkhwai, Nongtyrlaw, Umdu, Kpep Syiem, Umladoh, Umsohme, and Umden La-ang.
An emergency meeting was convened today by the village leaders to collectively express their strong opposition to the movement of heavy trucks that has caused significant damage to the road and pose a serious safety risk to local commuters due to its narrowness.
President of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Raid Sohkhwai, Bristar Sylliang told reporters that the PMGSY road was not constructed for heavy vehicles but trucks overloaded with coal, limestone, sand, crushed stones, boulders, and others frequent it.
Pointing out that such trucks are required to pass through the government’s weighbridge, the village leaders suspect the truck operators are intentionally using the village road to evade government tolls and taxes, disregarding the impact on residents who depend on this road for daily travel.
The meeting also decided to submit a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner to seek immediate intervention into the matter.
