An outreach programme on the dangers of rabies was held at Killing village, Ri Bhoi district today to educate the community about the fatal viral disease transmitted through the bites of infected animals like dogs and cats.
The awareness campaign was held after a woman from the village lost her life after she was bitten by her pet dog, suspected to be rabid.
The programme was organised by the office of the District Medical and Health Officer, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.
The awareness campaign was attended by local village leaders, elders, and residents.
Dr. A.J. Syiemlieh, District Surveillance Officer, Health Department, Ri Bhoi, and Dr. Aiban Phancon from the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department were present to discuss rabies.
Dr. Syiemlieh said that rabies is a highly dangerous and fatal disease if not treated promptly. She urged individuals who are bitten by animals to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility, as early intervention is critical to preventing the disease.
Pet owners are urged to ensure their animals, especially dogs and cats, are vaccinated to prevent the spread of rabies.
