The traditional leaders of Raid Sohkhwai, comprising seven villages adjacent to the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary, have passed a resolution opposing the Rs 23.60 crore contract for eco-tourism works in the reserve.
The village authorities expressed disappointment over the Wildlife Department’s failure to consult with them before awarding the contract to E-Factor Experiences Ltd.
The elders are concerned about the potential damage to the sanctuary’s ecosystem and the long-term consequences of commercialising the area. The village leaders questioned the government’s intentions, stating that they seem to be prioritising short-term gains over the well-being of the environment and local communities.
Meanwhile the Secretary of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong (Raid Sohkhwai) said, “Consultation with village and local authorities is key before introducing any project. We will not be lured or appeased by the government at the cost of the sanctuary.”
The Secretary of Umsohma village said, “We are unaware of the project, and the authorities’ neglect to inform us is unacceptable. We will stand firm against any compromise.”
Meanwhile Green-Tech Foundation, an environmental group, has welcomed the resolution and expressed its support for the village authorities. The foundation’s chairman, HB Nonglang, said that it is important to preserve the sanctuary’s ecosystem and the need for community-led initiatives.
The foundation warned the village leaders and administrative heads of potential attempts to mislead them regarding the ownership and management of the sanctuary. Nonglang further said, “We welcome the village leaders’ firm stance against the project. We urge them to remain committed to their opposition.”
