A joint operation was conducted to curb illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border yesterday, resulting in the seizure of unclaimed contraband items worth more than Rs 21 lakh in East Khasi Hills.
Acting on specific intelligence, troops from the 193 Bn of the Border Security Force (BSF) collaborated with Customs officials to establish a joint mobile check post near Sohritcham (Ladbakli). During routine checks, the team intercepted a bus traveling from Shillong to Photkroh, which was found to be loaded with suspicious goods.
As no individual came forward to claim ownership and there were no valid documents or bills of the consignment, the goods were immediately confiscated. The seized items were subsequently handed over to the Customs office in Dangar for further investigation and legal action, a press release stated today. However, there was no information on what the contraband consisted of.
In another operation based on specific intelligence, BSF Meghalaya rescued 47 cattle near the international border in South West Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills during the early hours of March 26. These cattle were intended for smuggling into Bangladesh, the force stated. The rescued animals were handed over to police for further legal action.
