The district administration of Mandya, Karnataka has decided to rehabilitate the 22 students from Meghalaya who were victims of food poisoning at the rehabilitation centre or Bala Mandir Centre once they are discharged from hospital.
Thirty students of the school in Karnataka suffered an acute case of food poisoning after consuming leftover food from Holi. Two children from Meghalaya – one on Sunday and the other on Monday – died despite receiving medical treatment. They were just 12 and 13 years old.
The officers of the district administration will also monitor the diet plan that would be given by the doctor.
This was decided during the review meeting chaired by the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya today along with various other officials.
It was also decided at the meeting that, because this is the month for the final examinations of the students, it will be a priority for the district administration to ensure that the recovering students are given the chance to sit their exams at the rehabilitation centre itself.
Later the chairman of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) had a brief interaction with the team from Meghalaya followed by the joint site inspection to the school where the untoward incident occurred.
After the site inspection was completed the Chairman of the KSCPCR visited the hospital where these students are being treated along with the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya district and other officials.
It was seen that the health condition of our students is improving except for one student who is still in the ICU but is stable.
Yesterday, the officials of Mandya district agreed to give the team from Meghalaya the report submitted to the Karnataka government as well as the report on the arrest being made along with the FIR, the students being affected, the food samples tested and any other additional information.
Meanwhile, the Bangalore unit of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged the Meghalaya government to ensure the safety and well being of the students studying outside the state.
Members of the union visited the student victims of food poisoning at the hospital today and called for strict action against those responsible for negligence leading to the incident.
The students’ union said they will continue to monitor developments with the state authorities and stressed on the need for improved safety in student accommodation.
