The Meghalaya government remains non-committal on the timeline for upgrading Laskein to a civil sub-division, with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stating that the proposal is under “serious examination.”
During the Budget Session today, Mowkaiaw legislator Nujorki Sungoh sought clarity on the issue. In response, Tynsong said there was no fixed timeline for the upgrade.
When Sungoh pointed out that the government’s stance had remained unchanged since 2018, Tynsong reiterated, “There is no specific timeline, but let the government examine the proposal. We are taking the issue very seriously.”
He further informed that in 2021, the government had sought reports from various departments regarding the creation of the civil sub-division. While some departments have submitted their reports, the majority are yet to do so.
Earlier, Sungoh argued that Laskein met all the necessary criteria for the upgrade, citing a population of 1.25 lakh (as per Aadhaar enrolment), 15,000 households and an area spanning 500 sq km.
