The State government has announced that the district council election for Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills will be conducted on February 21, 2025.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of district council affairs, Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the government has received the approval from the Governor for holding the elections to the Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous district councils.
He said the elections will be notified on January 27. The last date for filing of nominations is February 3. Nominations will be scrutinised on the same date and the last date for withdrawal of the nominations is scheduled on February 4.
Results will be declared on February 24.
Two political parties in the State have announced their candidates for the district council polls.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) had cleared its lists of candidates in all 29 constituencies for both the KHADC and JHADC.
The NPP has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming district council elections, which includes 18 candidates for the KHADC and 29 candidates for the JHADC.
The KHNAM has released the name of eight candidates in the first list for the KHADC polls.
The UDP is likely to declare its first list of candidates on December 13.
The Congress, HSPDP, BJP and Trinamool Congress are yet to announce their candidates for the district council polls.
The term of the present houses of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) was supposed to end in March this year.
However, due to the delimitation of constituencies, the term was extended twice for six months each.
