The annual Ex-Servicemen (ESM) rally for the Garo Hills region was held today at the SMELC premises in Tura.
The event was organised by the Directorate of Sainik Welfare Meghalaya, with support from HQ 101 Area in terms of personnel, materials, and logistics.
Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin attended the rally as the chief guest in the presence of Director of Sainik Welfare Meghalaya Col Gautam Rai (Retd.) along with other senior officers from the armed forces and notable civil dignitaries, ex-servicemen and Veer Naris from Meghalaya.
The rally aimed to honour ex-servicemen, war veterans, disabled soldiers, and war widows, underscoring the message that they remain integral members of the Armed Forces fraternity even after retirement. The event sought to address and alleviate concerns related to pensions, medical care, healthcare, re-employment, and the resolution of grievances.
During his address, Momin commended the ex-servicemen of the state, urging citizens to show respect for their valuable services to the country. He expressed gratitude for the contributions of the armed forces, noting that most personnel retire at a young age and that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure they are adequately employed to meet their families’ financial needs. He also highlighted the Chief Minister Elevate Programme, which can be used to enhance their skills and support entrepreneurship.
Rai stated that the rally in Tura was organized to help alleviate the challenges faced by ex-servicemen and their families residing in Garo Hills. He committed to ensuring that all ex-servicemen and their families receive the necessary support to make their post-retirement lives as hassle-free as possible.
The event featured Unit Run Canteen Counters, Medical Camps, and Grievance Cells, facilitated by organizations such as the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) and the Zilla Sainik Board (ZSB).
About 300 ex-servicemen, their families, dependents, and widows, including five Veer Naris attended the event.
Gifts and cash were also provided to the veterans’ widows.
