Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) South Garo Hills celebrated World Fisheries Day 2024 on the theme “India’s Blue Transformation: Strengthening Small-Scale and Sustainable Fisheries” at its office in Dagal Gopgre.
A total of 20 farmers from seven different villages participated in the celebration.
Thongam Monika Devi, Subject Matter Specialist (Fisheries) and Dr.Tanya R Marak, SMS (Plant Protection) highlighted the significance of sustainable aquaculture practices and their vital role in enhancing the livelihoods of fisherfolk. Both experts emphasised the importance of responsible fisheries management to ensure the long-term health of aquatic ecosystems.
As a part of the celebration, fish fingerlings were distributed to the participants to support their aquaculture activities. The event served as a reminder of the essential role of fisheries in rural economies and the need for sustainable practices in the sector.
Principal Scientist Dr. Athokpam Haribhushan, who also heads the district KVK was also present on the occasion.
