The NPP today withdrew its support to the BJP government in Manipur.

NPP president Conrad Sangma today sent an official letter to BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nanda informing that the party has pulled out of the ruling alliance.

In the letter, Sangma conveyed his party’s deep concern over the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur.

“In the last few days, we have seen the situation further deteriorate where many more innocent lives have been lost and people in the State are going through immense suffering. The NPP strongly feel that the Manipur government under the leadership of Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy,” Sangma said.

“Keeping the current situation in mind, the NPP has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh led government in the State of Manipur, with immediate effect,” he added.

The NPP has seven MLAs in the Manipur Assembly who include Sheikh Noorul Hassan, Khuraijam Loken Singh, Irengbam Nalini Devi, Thongam Shanti Singh, Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, N Kayisii, and Janghemlung Panmei.

However, the withdrawal of support will not have any impact on the survival of the Biren Singh government as the BJP has a majority on its own in the Manipur Assembly. The party has 37 members in the 60-member strong Assembly.

In another development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today reviewed the security situation in Manipur and directed top officials to take all possible steps to ensure peace in the state.

Shah held the meeting soon after he returned from Maharashtra after cancelling his election rallies there.
