The Meghalaya High Court today asked the Central government to resolve the crisis in North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) by November 20. It also said that any failure by the Central government to resolve the issue within this period would force the court to take suo motu cognisance of the affairs and decide the matter accordingly.
The a division bench of the Meghalaya High Court consisting of Chief Justice Indra Prassana Mukerji and Justice B Bhattacharjee gave the directions after hearing a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the ongoing imbroglio in the NEHU.
“As the administration of the university is controlled by the Central government, we are minded to give some more time to it to resolve the issue. If the problems persist till the returnable date, we shall consider taking suo motu cognisance of the affairs and decide the matter accordingly,” the High Court said.
The High Court also stated that it has taken judicial notice of the fact that the State government has made some recommendations to the Central government to resolve the acute problems which NEHU is facing today and that the Central government is contemplating measures to resolve them.
The High Court also stated that it shall continue to take judicial notice of the developments.
Listing the matter for hearing on November 20, the High Court directed that this order should be sent to all stakeholders including the Central and State governments, the vice chancellor, the employees’ and students’ unions of NEHU.
Earlier, High Court advocate P Yobin, mentioned during the hearing about the affairs of NEHU and requested the court to take suo motu cognisance of the same and pass appropriate orders to restore normalcy and for smooth running of the university.
