Members of the executive committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) met with Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on the issue of seven bills that have been passed by the KHADC but yet to receive assent by the Governor.
KHADC Chief Executive Member told reporters after the meeting that the Governor had been urged to give his approval to the seven bills, which include the Elaka Amendment Bill 2023 and Social Custom of Lineage Amendment Bill 2023.
The former is aimed at giving recognition to the functioning of the Seng Samla (youth organisation) and Seng Kynthei-Seng Longkmie (women’s organisation) within the dorbar shnongs.
The second bill relates to the various clans of the Khasi people that are yet to be registered and recognised by the law. A third pending bit of legislation is the Regulation and Administration of Land Amendment Bill 2024.
Vijayashankar reportedly told the delegation that he understood the importance of the bills and will look into giving them approval at the earliest.
