Militant turned social activist Champion R Sangma has been appointed as the new advisor of the All Garo Hills Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Federation, it was announced today.
A meeting of the federation was held in Tura yesterday with a large number of delegates from around Garo Hills attending to make their voices heard.
Representatives from different areas highlighted the challenges faced by Anganwadi workers and helpers, emphasising the need for improved working conditions, fair wages and recognition for the critical role they play in the development of young children and community health.
Sangma, who was a former police officer before founding the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), spoke about the importance of unity among the workers and pledged to work tirelessly towards their common goals. He acknowledged their vital contribution in Garo Hills and assured them of his unwavering support in their fight for better working conditions and adequate recognition.
Delegates called for immediate measures to address long-standing grievances, including delays in payment of salaries, lack of infrastructure and insufficient resources to carry out their duties effectively. The federation’s leaders also highlighted the need for continuous training and development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of Anganwadi workers and helpers.
