Revenue & Disaster Minister Kyrmen Shylla along with Cabinet Minister Alexander L Hek conducted a review meeting in Jowai on disaster related issues caused by incessant rain over the last fews days in both West and East Jaintia Hills districts.
The meeting was attended by the deputy commissioners of both the districts, Batlang S Sohliya and Abhilash Baranwal, SDO Amlarem Dr. Abhishek Saini, BDO of Thadlaskein B. Langbang, officials of the district, Superintendent of Police Chemphang Syrti and officials from different departments.
Hek said that the meeting was to assess recent damages including property, roads infrastructure affected by monsoon and to promptly compile an inventory and to provide immediate relief within 48 hours utilising available funding without delay to ensure quick assistance reaches those affected.
Shylla stressed that the relevant departments should act immediately during natural calamities instead of waiting for the disaster management teams to intervene. He emphasised that immediate response by the concerned departments will provide timely assistance to the affected individuals and also to carry out necessary repairs promptly.
The deputy commissioners presented a brief report on the natural calamities that have recently affected the Jaintia region. Informing that heavy rain has caused extensive damage to roads and bridges due to landslides, damage to electric poles and other weather related issues, the DCs said immediate action were taken by the district administration, rapid response team and departments concerned.
It was noted that no lives were lost in West Jaintia Hills except for one fatality at Sutnga village of East Jaintia Hills District during Cyclone Remal.
