Three men were rescued today after escaping a kidnapping while on a trip to Assam.
Yesterday evening, one Kirit Dohtdong reported that her husband, Iohborlang Kharsati from Mawlang, Ri-Bhoi had been kidnapped along with two companions, Kostarwell Jyrwa and Samsul Ali. The trio had gone to Guwahati that morning to buy an earth mover (JCB).
At 4pm, she received a phone call from her husband’s number wherein she was informed that the three men had been kidnapped by unknown individuals who were demanding Rs 7 lakh for their safe release.
Police from Ri-Bhoi were dispatched today morning to Nalbari district after the location of the victims was tracked to that area. Nalbari police were also informed.
Two men – Samsul Hoque and Abdul Aziz – were picked up by Mukulmua police and, under interrogation, admitted to the kidnap and provided the phone numbers of their accomplices. The locations of the co-accused were tracked to a national highway near Tihu and police there took swift action by setting up a checkpoint.
The three victims managed to escape from a vehicle after the kidnappers noticed the checkpoint and tried to reverse. Police then completed the rescue but the two suspects escaped.
