With fires in open areas likely to get out of control given the high temperatures and dry weather, the District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has prohibited the burning of grasses and wood in forest and grassland areas, park gardens, plantations, barren lands and the burning of any forest within the district.
The order under Section 144 of the CrPC was passed yesterday but shared with the media only today.
Several incidents of burning grasses and forests have been reported in different parts of the district of late, either deliberately or by accident.
Such fires cause severe air pollution and lead to the destruction of vegetation, forest cover and also pose a serious threat to human life and property, the DM said.
