      Filing of nominations for LS polls ends, scrutiny today

      Filing of nominations for the two seats in Meghalaya ended today. A total of nine candidates have filed nominations for the general election.

      Shillong and Tura parliamentary constituencies will vote in the first phase on April 19.

      For Shillong constituency, five candidates filed nominations and in Tura four aspirants filed papers.

      The scrutiny of papers will be held tomorrow.

      The last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 30.

      The process of submitting nominations began with the issue of notification on March 20.

      Sitting Lok Sabha MP and MPCC President, Vincent H Pala will challenge NPP candidate and cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, UDP’s Robertjune Kharjahrin, VPP Ricky J Syngkon and Independent candidate Lakhon Kma for the Shillong constituency.

      Agatha K Sangma is seeking another term in Lok Sabha from Tura constituency. The Congress has decided to field sitting MLA Saleng Sangma and TMC in former MLA, Zenith Sangma. An independent candidate Labenn Ch Marak, a former MCS officer, has also thrown himself into the podium of contenders.

      As per the data, 22, 17,100 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, out of which 10, 94, 947 are male voters and 11, 22,150 female. There are three voters registered as transgenders.

      There are 3,512 polling stations, out of which, 326 are in the urban areas and 3,186 in the rural segment.

      Meanwhile, one Election Police Observer and one Election General Observer have arrived in Shillong for next month’s Lok Sabha election and are stationed at Pinewood Hotel.

      IPS officer Ponugunatla Ramjee (Ph: 8132828564) is the police observer and IAS officer Mukul Sharma (Ph: 9863908207) is the general observer. They will be available 12pm to 2pm and 10am to 4pm respectively.

      Anyone having queries, complaints, information, etc regarding the election to the Shillong Lok Sabha seat can contact them, the District Election Officer of East Khasi Hills informed today.
