A day after Mukul Sangma’s close aide, Winnerson D. Sangma joined the BJP, scores of Congress workers from East Jaintia Hills defected to the saffron party.
A programme to welcome them was held today at Khiehriat, East Jaintia Hills district which was attended by State BJP President Rikman Momin as well as state and district office bearers of the party.
According to the BJP, to make matters “more exciting” for the party in Meghalaya, there is a long queue of prominent names waiting to join the party and more announcements are expected in the coming days.
One former Congress member who joined the BJP said that he chose the saffron party over his grand old party, because he was attracted by the affable nature of the BJP members in his area.
“A reflection of which I saw in the president Rikman G Momin himself when we met him today,” he said.
Another person who joined the party today said, “BJP is the future for our state. The party rules at the centre and in 18 other Indian states, including many states of the North East. We have all seen the kind of development that has taken place in these BJP ruled areas, Assam and Tripura included. I was awed by the central schemes introduced by Shri Narendra Modi’s Govt.; schemes that will uplift every member of our community and help us prosper. We now need the BJP in Meghalaya to ensure that these central schemes are properly implemented.”
Meanwhile, Momin said, “The people are our greatest advertisement. To understand our approach and impact on people’s lives, please talk to those who have benefitted from the central schemes, take the opinion of those who are regularly approached by BJP members with plans that change lives, because of this we are growing and will continue to advance in the foreseeable future.”
