The Wrestling Association of Meghalaya (WAM) conducted selections for the 3rd North East Olympic Games (NEOG) 2024, to be held in Nagaland from March 18 to 23.
The selection camp was held at the Happy Red Rooster gym in Laitumkhrah here on Friday.
WAM will be sending two contingents of athletes for two different disciplines – belt wrestling and freestyle wrestling.
Belt wrestling involves two wrestlers grappling each other’s belt and trying to pull them to the ground. Along with Greco-Roman, freestyle wrestling is one of the two styles contested at the Olympic Games.
Wrestling as a whole is fairly new to Meghalaya, with WAM only formed a few months before the second edition of the NEOG in Shillong back in 2022.
Those who appeared for the selection trials included medal winners from the 5th Meghalaya Games, which was held last month in Tura, WAM said in a press release, though it did not release the names of the athletes selected.
WAM is awaiting details relating to logistical support for selection, coaching trails and travel to Nagaland from the Meghalaya State Olympic Association and Department of Sports and Youth Affairs.
