Ri-Bhoi bagged gold medals in both the U-18 men’s and women’s football categories at the 5th Meghalaya Games in Tura yesterday.
The most exciting match, which kept every spectator on the edge of their seat, was the final showdown between Ri-Bhoi boys and West Jaintia Hills.
Despite witnessing numerous chances from both sides, none could score in normal time, leading the match into extra time. It was only during the dying minutes of the second half of extra time that a goal from Riskhem Syiem helped Ri-Bhoi secure their gold medal, relegating WJH to silver.
East Khasi Hills secured bronze after winning the third place playoff 3-1 against hosts West Garo Hills. EKH’s Freddy Jyrwa, who scored four goals in the tournament, earned the Top Scorer award. Kitboklang Buam of WJH, displaying excellence at the goal post, won the Best Goalkeeper award, while his team mate Tirot Kyndait was honoured with the Best Player of the Tournament award.
Turning to U-18 girls’ football, Ri-Bhoi showcased exceptional performance to secure the gold with a victory against the favoured EKH team. With normal time ending 0-0, the thrilling final went into a nail-biting penalty shootout. However, Ri-Bhoi goalkeeper Nibari Maring had a few tricks under her sleeves, saving two penalties, which resulted in a 3-2 win for her side.
Maring, the hero of the match, earned the Best Goalkeeper award. Meanwhile, with 15 goals in the tournament, East Khasi Hills’ Inrilaidor Khongthaw clinched the Top Scorer and Player of the Tournament awards.
VOLLEYBALL
Meanwhile, in volleyball, a sport making its debut at the Games, South West Khasi Hills secured the gold medal in the women’s category, defeating South West Garo Hills 25-22, 25-11, 25-20. The bronze went to East Khasi Hills.
The men’s category witnessed an electrifying match as West Garo Hills emerged as champions, overpowering SWKH 25-23, 25-13, 25-15. WGH players showcased a remarkable combination of powerful spikes, precise serves and solid defence, securing their well-deserved gold medal. The bronze went to SWGH.
