A donation pledged by a contractor accused for illegal extraction of stones along the banks of Myntdu River was today handed over to West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner, Batlang S Sohliya.
Contractor, Friday Hinge had engaged an excavator and trucks to illegally mine and transport stones from the river towards Lad Mustem on July 16. The illegal act was caught red handed on camera by the Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu (KYM), an organisation rooting for clean environment and police.
Members of the KYM met the DC and handed over the donation of Rs 5 lakh towards restoration of the river which was deposited at the ICICI Bank, Jowai under the account of the West Jaiñtia Hills District-Environment Protection & Restoration Fund.
KYM vice president, Bishar Shylla told reporters that the fund will be towards rejuvenation of Myntdu with the support and cooperation of the public and government departments.
The organisation has also urged the district head to allow traditional methods of sand extraction by using a spade to enable people to use it for house construction.
Meanwhile, the KYM expressed concern over reckless dumping of earth into the Myntdu for construction of the by pass from Khliehtyrshi to Treïongriang and urged the authorities to keep a check so that no further harm comes to the river.
