Two Assam-registered trucks were involved in a serious head-on collision at Shangbangla, Ri-Bhoi, last night, resulting in injuries to one of the drivers.
The incident took place at around 6pm when one truck (AS 01 JC 3752), which was loaded with cement, travelling from Shillong to Guwahati, collided with another (AS 01 PC 2015) proceeding from the other direction.
The former is said to have been speeding, which caused the driver to lose control and cross over to the wrong side of the road where it crashed into the other truck.
In the aftermath, the lane from Guwahati towards Shillong was completely blocked and the authorities diverted all vehicles to the opposite lane until the blockage could be cleared.
The driver of the speeding truck fled the scene immediately while the other sustained injuries and was taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment.
Ri-Bhoi police have initiated an investigation into the incident and are on the lookout for the absconding driver.
