Where was Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya, Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi when the issue of Khasi and Garo language was raised in the Rajya Sabha today?
The issue was brought in the House by Trinamool Congress MP, Saket Gokhale during question hour.
“What is the current status of including the Khasi and Garo languages of Meghalaya in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India and by when does the government plan to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution?”
Gokhale also said that the Central government has received a proposal from the Meghalaya government recently on this matter.
Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda replied that the Central government is taking steps to protect the tribal languages of the country.
However, Kharlukhi, the NPP MP to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya, was neither seen nor taking part to support the question raised by Gokhale. This has raised a lot of questions.
Meanwhile, in his post on X (formerly Twitter), Gokhale said, “My question to the Modi Govt in Parliament today on inclusion of Garo & Khasi languages of Meghalaya in the 8th Schedule of Constitution of India. This is a long pending demand of the tribal communities of Meghalaya & must be fulfilled if govt cares about North Eastern culture.”
