Is Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) leader Robertjune Kharjahrin switching over to politics?
Kharjahrin stepped down from his post as HYC president during the general executive council meeting of the organisation held here yesterday.
The meeting elected Roy Kupar Synrem as the new president of HYC. Synrem was earlier the general secretary of the organisation.
However, Kharjahrin will remain as chief adviser of HYC while another former HYC president Peter J. Lawai has been appointed as adviser.
It may be mentioned that recently, the name of Kharjahrin figured among the aspirants for UDP ticket to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Shillong seat.
Reports said that Kharjahrin had approached the UDP and offered to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Besides Kharjahrin, two others are reportedly keen for the UDP ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls. They are former Mawlai MLA Process T. Sawkmie and Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) president D Rockyer Lyngdoh Nonglait.
The fact that Kharjahrin has stepped down from the top post in the HYC at this stage has raised speculations that he may be the top contender for the UDP ticket.
UDP sources said the decision on the ticket would be decided “at an appropriate time”.
“We still have time to decide. We will do so at an appropriate time. We have three-four names as of now,” a party leader said on condition of anonymity.
However, the UDP leader declined to reveal the names of those who have sought a poll ticket from the party.
Meanwhile, the HYC has elected Donboklang Kharlyngdoh and Francis Gee Mawlong as vice presidents and Rhembor G. Saibon as the new general secretary.
The new office bearers will be administered the oath of office on November 11.
