The deputy commissioners in South West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills have identified locations for the state-wide mock exercise to be conducted on October 12 in their respective districts.
In South West Khasi Hills the mock exercise will be carried out at the Mini Secretariat, Civil Hospital, Mawkyrwat, Nativity Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat Market, and various Government offices within the district.
In West Jaintia Hills, the selected locations are Bharat Pump New Hill, Hospital -Lumkyrwiang Urban Primary Health Centre, Landslide area Gate Laban, Shopping Complex – Iaphi Shopping Complex, Iawmusiang Jowai near Meghalaya Studio.
Medical camps, staging area, relief camp, incident command post, base camps will be set up at Presbyterian School Mission compound playground.
To create awareness among citizens and educate them about disaster preparedness and response, the District Disaster Management Authority, Jowai has informed that there will also be live streaming on YouTube by SAMSAWA production.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority will conduct a state level mock exercise across Meghalaya from 9 am to simulate the massive 1897 earthquake that devastated parts of what is now Meghalaya and the response of the authorities.
The public are urged not to panic upon hearing the sound of siren as this is part of the mock exercise to check the Incident Response team preparedness towards any eventuality that may arise during disaster.
