In a joint operation with state police, personnel of the 43rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya arrested two suspected smugglers in a vehicle that was carrying around 3 tonnes of sugar meant to be smuggled over the international border into Bangladesh.
Acting on a specific tip-off, the BSF and Baghmara police swung into action yesterday in South Garo Hills.
During preliminary questioning, both apprehended individuals revealed that they are residents of Baghmara, from where they had loaded sugar into the Bolero pickup. The two Indian smugglers and the seized items were handed over to the Baghmara police station for further action.
