Meghalaya Police have arrested a man who had been posing as an IB officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as officer of the Police Special Branch for duping people on the pretext of giving them jobs.
The accused has been identified as Richard Tiplang Swer of Wahingdoh locality in Shillong.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said the first complaint was lodged on May 16, 2023 that Swer, who had claimed to be an IB Officer had collected Rs 80 lakh from 38 persons since last one year through the complainant. He had offered to provide jobs in the Secretariat, Shillong through MPSC and DSC.
Another FIR was received at Lumdiengjri PS on May 22 that Swer impersonated himself as an officer of the Police Special Branch and told the complainant that he can provide jobs in the Police Department under the condition that the applicants pays an amount of Rs. 1 lakh for Non- Matriculate and Rs. 50,000 for Matriculate.
Unaware of being duped, the complainant had approached his friends, where one of them handed over an advance of Rs 50,000 to the person through his driver at Motphran in March.
Syiem said Swer was arrested from his home at Wahingdoh and will be forwarded to the court. A Bolero bearing registration number ML-05-Z-3007 with siren and VIP blinker, mobile, laptop and incriminating papers were also seized.
Two cases have been registered against Swer at Mawlai and Lumdiengjri police stations and police has urged people who have been duped by him to lodge an FIR at the nearest police station.
