Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent M. Basaiawmoit today said that there were pressure groups that tried to create public confusion on the job reservation policy.
Addressing a public meeting at Jaiaw here today, Basaiawmoit said that two pressure groups have given statements on the quota policy leading to confusion among people. He however did not name the two pressure groups.
“Due to such statements, some people became scared of our demand for review and revamp of the reservation policy. I never expected such kind of statements from such pressure groups. There are those who feared that our demand could lead to intervention by the court,” Basaiawmoit said.
“It would have been good for such pressure groups to meet us before giving such statements so that they could get a clearer view on this issue,” he added.
The VPP president also said that a certain columnist tried to tarnish the party by writing an article accusing the VPP of politicising the reservation policy issue
“These people who sit in cozy and air-conditioned room write such articles to mislead the people about our demand. We did not take up this issue for election purposes. We had demanded for a special session of the Assembly to discuss this issue. Since the government is unwilling to concede, we decided to go to the people to enlighten them about the demerits and lacunae of the existing reservation policy,” Basaiawmoit said.
He also said that the existing reservation policy which favours only one community and the roster system being implemented under the faulty policy has caused worry among the unemployed youth who are waiting to get government jobs.
“There are jobless youth who have suffered depression because they are unsure of getting employment under the present system,” Basaiawmoit said.
Calling for an immediate review and revamp of the reservation policy, Basaiawmoit said that the VPP would not rest until the issue is addressed and all lacunae are rectified.
