Ahead of the Easter celebrations and its subsequent culmination with a picnic on Monday, the district administrations of East and West Garo Hills have appealed to the general public to follow certain guidelines and advisories.
Last year, a series of unfortunate events struck Garo Hills on Easter Monday, resulting in the loss of seven confirmed cases of accidents and deaths in Garo Hills.
The respective deputy commissioners have urged the public to refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages during the picnic and to stay away from river banks and huge rocks. The appeal also recommended the use of bio-degradable items instead of plastic ones as well as to desist from littering. An appeal was also made to the public to refrain from playing loud music.
In its appeal, East Garo Hills police said it is not restricting picnics or celebrations of Easter Monday but will help everyone safe during celebration by strictly controlling participation of law breakers.
Members of the Garo community traditionally go on outings and picnics on Easter Monday with family and friends across age groups.
The 2022 Easter tragedies were reported at Rongkem near Samanda in the Simsang River, Ganol River at Damalgre, Nawaldare waterfall, Emangre Fish Sanctuary in the Aginma River in South Garo Hills, Chichra Manda Chibima River, Rongchong Wa’geasi, in North Garo Hills, Dobu, East Garo Hills and Watregre-Jengjal, Darugre-Rongjeng.
