Registering strong opposition to the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in Meghalaya, the headmen body from Ri-Bhoi, the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri Bhoi District, today urged all 60 MLAs in the state to come out against the central government’s leanings towards such a code.
The Synjuk held an executive committee meeting today at Umsning it decided to support church leaders who had already opposed the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Synjuk’s general secretary, PB Sylliang, said that the headmen fear that the UCC will have a negative impact on the culture and the identity of the tribal people. He also said that if the UCC is implemented, it will not only affect the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and autonomous district councils which protect the identity and special rights of tribal people.
