Two-time NPP legislator Thomas A. Sangma is set to be appointed as the new Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The MLA from North Tura was today nominated as the candidate of the 45-member MDA-2 alliance for the post of Speaker.
Sangma also today filed his nominations before the Assembly’s Commissioner & Secretary Andrew Simons at the Assembly Secretariat for the upcoming Speaker’s election to be held on March 9.
Meanwhile, Sangma is likely to be elected unopposed for the post of Speaker since the Opposition is unlikely to set up any candidate against him.
The MDA-2 government has the support of NPP (26), UDP (11) BJP (2), HSPDP (2), PDF (2) and Independents (2).
The opposition bench on the other hand has a strength of 14 members which include Congress (5), All India Trinamool Congress (5), and Voice of the People Party (4).
If elected, Sangma will succeed UDP chief and Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh who held the post of Speaker from 2018 to February 2023.
