A gruesome discovery was made today after the decapitated head of an unknown man was found on the banks of the Umiam River in Ri-Bhoi.
The highly decomposed head was found by villagers, who accordingly informed police.
The site was fairly close to Umiam police station and officials transported the head to Nongpoh Civil Hospital to try and ascertain the cause of death.
Police searched the whole of Umiam Lake to find the rest of the body but in vain. A suo moto case will be taken up by police, sources said, with the authorities believing it to be a case of murder.
