Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the swearing in ceremony of the NPP-BJP led coalition government at the Raj Bhavan on March 7.
NPP chief Conrad Sangma today informed that he has received the Governor’s invitation to form government and expects the PM and Shah to attend the function.
Sangma yesterday staked claim to form the government with the support of 32 MLAs. These include 26 from the NPP, two each from the BJP and HSPDP and two independents.
He told reporters today that he will ensure stability with the 32 MLAs even though it is challenging to run a coalition government. “We will do our best to ensure that all the partners are given the space and ensure consultancy and team work,” he said.
Sangma also said the NPP is still reaching out to other political parties and discussion is on.
Reacting to the demand made by pressure groups for the two HSPDP MLAs—Methodius Dkhar and Shakliar Warjri—to withdraw their support to the NPP, Sangma said that the MLAs have been elected by the people of their constituency and it them who will decide whom they will support.
“There are ways and a process in which the government is elected. It has been done for decades, in our state, and for many, many decades throughout the country and throughout the world. And therefore, if there was anything that had to be said it should have been said during the elections. Once the mandate is given the people of Meghalaya and the people of the country have always accepted whatever mandate has been given and accordingly we should move forward.”
