Around three-quarters of Meghalaya’s registered voters cast their ballots in the Assembly election today, according to estimated figures released by the Election Commission.
The overall state turnout was 74.32 percent. The two lowest performing seats were the twin constituencies of North and South Tura, which recorded 55.50 and 52.10 percent respectively. This despite Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, running from South Tura, saying earlier that the constituency had never seen such a good turnout.
However, the data is provisional as information from certain polling stations could take time to reach the Election Commission, which compiles the data.
The new district of Eastern West Khasi Hills recorded the best voting percentages in the state in its two constituencies – 90.40 percent in Mairang and 90.10 percent in Mawthadraishan.
Shillong’s turnout was comparatively poor, which is normal, with percentages ranging from a low of 58.54 in North Shillong to 76.14 in Mawlai being the highest.
Garo Hills’ best performing constituency was Rajabala with 82.02 percent, closely followed by Songsak on 82.00.
